The state of Tocantins lies in the geographic transition zone between the cerrado and the Amazonian forest. In that it presents / displays two types of vegetation: the Amazon rainforest of terra firme, or Forest Ombrófila, and Savana, denominated, respectively, of biome Amazonia and biome Cerrado. In the Amazonian area are the regions of Dense Ombrophylous Forest (Alluvial, Lowlands, and Submontana) and Open Ombrophylous Forest (Lowlands and Submontana); and in the Extra-Amazonian area the Deciduous and Semideciduous Seasonal Forest and Savana (cerrado, cerrado, campo-cerrado, parks, clean field and ruprestre fields). According to IBGE (2007), the Amazon biome occupies about 9% of the territory of the state of Tocantins, the rest of the territory (91%) is occupied by the Cerrado biome. Recalling that within each biome variations occur regarding the characteristic vegetation. The Brazilian Cerrado is the second largest biome in the country and South America. Its vast area extends between eleven Brazilian states: Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Tocantins, Maranhão, Piauí and Federal District. It has a strategic role for the environment, economy and food security, in addition to housing large carbon stocks, water resources and impressive biodiversity.
